Columbus, Ohio - Arts, Community And The Creative Fight Against Gentrification In Our Cities [Video]

Cities are perhaps the greatest human social experiment of the modern age. Their creation is still a relatively recent part of human evolution and their form, function and future have all been a process of trial and error.

Columbus is the capital of and the largest city in the state of Ohio. It is the 15th largest city in the United States with a population of just over 822k in 2013.

Nearly a quarter of the homes in the Franklinton neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio are vacant. In 2011, an arts group moved into an abandoned factory in the area to create 400 West Rich Street, a community that now leases space to woodworkers, performance artists, a coffee shop, painters, sculptors, and others.

This short documentary considers the artists who work in 400 West Rich Street, why the space attracted them, and what it means for revitalization of the neighborhood.

Times Square, New York: Why Do People Love Times Square? This Film Asks Them Why [Video]

Bill and Michael work freelance and are based in New York City.

Here they investigate Times Square and describe the subject of their film:

“Find out what New York City’s Times Square is all about by talking to the characters that pass through it during the night.”

Times Square is a major commercial intersection and a neighborhood in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, at the junction of Broadway (now converted into a pedestrian plaza) and Seventh Avenue and stretching from West 42nd to West 47th Streets.

Brightly adorned with billboards and advertisements, Times Square is sometimes referred to as “The Crossroads of the World”, “The Center of the Universe”, and “The Great White Way”.

It is the hub of the Broadway Theater District, one of the world’s busiest pedestrian intersections, and a major center of the world’s entertainment industry.

Times Square is one of the world’s most visited tourist attractions, drawing over 39 million visitors annually. Approximately 330,000 people pass through Times Square daily, many of whom are either tourists or people working in the area.

With all that going on, how did Bill and Michael tackle this subject?

Watch the film to find out.

Stanislas Giroux takes us on one of the greatest railways journeys on the planet – The Trans-Siberian.

He describes the background to his film:

‘Three minutes of video for three weeks of travel, three countries, three cultures (and three tee-shirts in my backpack !) ; I took a train ticket for the Trans-Siberian railway, in order to reach Beijing from Moscow, crossing Mongolia. I travelled alone with my bag, half-filled with my video gear. At that time, I didn’t knew that my ticket for that seat 22 would be the beginning of a once in a lifetime journey.’

The Trans-Siberian Railway is a network of railways connecting Moscow with the Russian Far East and the Sea of Japan. With a length of 9,289 km (5,772 mi),[2] it is the longest railway line in the world. There are connecting branch lines into Mongolia, China and North Korea. It has connected Moscow with Vladivostok since 1916, and is still being expanded.

It was built from 1891 to 1916 under the supervision of Russian government ministers who were personally appointed by Tsar Alexander III and by his son, Tsar Nicholas II.

Astronaut - A Journey To Space. So Dynamic And Fast - Experience Travel Through Space With The ISS at 28,000km/h! [Video]

Guillaume Juin has created a work of great intensity and power. If you want to experience what it’s like to be an astronaut in space, then this is as near as you’ll probably ever get to the real thing.

In his words:

“What does astronaut see from up there? From the red soil of africa, the blue water of oceans, to the green lights of the poles and yellow light of human activity, discover, throught this journey to space, something astoundingly beautiful and strange at the same time.

I wanted to do something different from what has been done before with those shots. Something more dynamic and fast. After all, ISS travel through space at 28.000km/h! There are also more recent footage that have never been used (at least I think…) in other edits.

All the credit goes to the crew members of ISS expeditions 28, 29, 30, 31, 34, shot from 2011 to 2014.

The international Space Station weigh 377 tons, orbits the earth at around 350km from the surface, and does one spin around the earth in 1h30, at 28.000k/h! At 1’11 we can see a little refueling shuttle desintegrating back to earth. At 1’20, it’s an Orbital Science’s Cygnus Orb-2 spacecraft that is launched into orbit. The little green and purple lights you can see at 1’57 are respectively fishing boats and oil platforms offshore with the big city of Bangkok nearby.”

A marvellous film.

Carnivorous Plants: The Carnivorous Garden Is The Ultimate Horror Movie For Insects. Superb Time-lapse Footage Captures The Hidden Dark Side Of Plants [Video]

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the garden.

Carnivorous plants are plants that derive some or most of their nutrients (but not energy) from trapping and consuming animals or protozoans, typically insects and other arthropods.

They have adapted to grow in places where the soil is thin or poor in nutrients, especially nitrogen, such as acidic bogs and rock outcroppings. Charles Darwin wrote Insectivorous Plants, the first well-known treatise on carnivorous plants, in 1875.

They employ a number of techniques to catch their prey, including:

– Pitfall traps

– Flypaper traps

– Snap traps

– Bladder traps

– Lobster-pot traps

– Combination traps

Introducing:

The completed Biolapse film of carnivorous plants.

Chris Field’s film, Carnivora Gardinum or ‘Carnivorous Garden’, is nothing short of a work of genius.

He describes the process:

“Over a year of effort, with 107 days of straight shooting with 2 cameras. I started out building timelapse equipment so I could go do timelapse. Then people started giving me money to build them systems. Eventually it turned into a business, The Chronos Project LLC. Finally I have had time to start working on my own timelapse work. I have decided to pull myself out of the world and into the studio for some areas of timelapse photography that are greatly under explored.

He has a website Biolapse that is pretty in depth with regards to his processes.

Charlie Chicken, Canine Artist - An Affection Look At Dogs, Life And Art In New York City

Charlie Chicken is a world-renowned canine artist. Originally from Puerto Rico, he works out of Brooklyn, New York, where his art has been featured in MOMA, the Louvre, and the Getty. This is his story.

He describes some of his approach:

“The film was fun to make – it was an idea Lily and I had floating in our heads for a while. So many short doc portraits of artists that take themselves very seriously. Not this one. No way. Wait, maybe a little.

On making the film – we shot following the principles of Dogma ’95. All natural light. All handheld. Lars Von Trier is really excited and put his name on as executive producer due to the subject matter and verified on set that we followed each step.”

Laughing Owl - Now You"ve Seen Everything. How A Small Tweak To A 15 Second Video Sent It Viral [Video]

It’s like a scene from a Harry Potter film.

A rescued owl has become famous because of a 15 second video, a copyright claim and a small tweak to the footage that sent it viral.

VanCity Video who made the edit to the original version wrote:

“I made this edit to the original owl video. Later, the owner of the original video sold the rights to a media company, which proceeded to file copyright claims against all uses of the original. This resulted in ads being placed on this video, with the revenue going directly to that media company. Sorry that you now have to watch ads on a 15 second clip.”

Nice video guys!

10 Fabulous Pictures Of The Karapan Sapi Festival In Madura, Indonesia

Festivals are an essential part of global life and function as an important way in which people still retain their unique identity, in an increasingly homogenised world.

Karapan sapi is a traditional bull racing festival on the Indonesian island of Madura.

Every year from about July through October, local bulls are yoked to wooden skids and raced for 130 meters, similar to a chariot race.

There are several of these races throughout the season, and there is a final trophy race held in Pamekasan. The bulls participating in the event are adorned with gold and other decorations, and the event may be accompanied by Gamelan music, food, and wagers on the outcome of the race.

The pictures below capture the energy of the moment superbly, as the riders desperately hang-on as the fearsome power of the bulls is unleashed:

Giant Siberian Sinkhole: Huge Hole Mysteriously Appears In The Yamal Peninsular

An amazing giant hole has emerged in Siberia, which earth scientists are currently trying to explain.

The Guardian newspaper reports that:

“The 35-metre deep sinkhole was discovered in July after an unexplained eruption that flung soil and rock 120 metres from the site. It was initially thought it might be related to fossil fuel exploration, as it is 25 miles from the largest gas field in the region, but after a radar scan of the ground the team said it was most likely to be due to natural causes that would require further research.

The sinkhole was discovered and filmed from a helicopter this summer by oil and gas technicians on the Yamal peninsula, which in the language of its indigenous inhabitants who live north of the Arctic circle means end of the world. Two more unexplained sinkholes have since emerged in the far north of Russia.”

The picture below show the scale of the sinkhole and the first people to enter into it:
